Meanings and Materialities
Meanings and Materialities
Exhibition 6–15 June
Open every day 12:00-18:00A. Cadia
Performance with a tattoo machine, ink, vaseline and thermal paper. 4 hours. 2024.
"It is Only Our Act of Looking That Forces Nature's Hand" is a minimalist 4-hour performance that explores themes of self-identity, transformation and the transient nature of pain. The artist Cadia tattoos themselves, using their non-binary body as the sole site of research into identity. "It is Only Our Act of Looking That Forces Nature's Hand” is a statement on the indivisible power of self-definition and and the role of the observer in the ongoing narrative of queer identity.
A.Cadia is a Helsinki based performance artist and a doctoral researcher at University of Arts Helsinki. Cadia’s practice draws on feminist and queer theories to create performance works that explore representational politics, gender, sexuality, queer body and increasingly feminist futurisms and queer world building. Essential part of their thinking is to make space for non-binary ways of being.
Currently they are working on the second artistic element of their doctoral research, BINARY THE TRILOGY: QUEER PYRAMID. The trilogy will be a series of performances and installations focusing on deconstructing the concept of stage as a merely architectonic plateau of knowledge production and presenting a queer body in that newly defined space. The first part, BINARY THE TRILOGY: TESTO TEMPLE was selected for a two year residency at the contemporary art festival Anti in Kuopio and premiered there in 2023.
