The Given is a small sculpture consisting of wood, plywood, woven fabric, and larch tree needles. It is a reconstruction of a possible situation in urban space, depicting the growth of something organic in a narrow gap between two similar units. The Given points to an observer’s gift to notice details in the surroundings and to the giving features of urban situations.
Denise Ziegler, DFA, is a visual artist and researcher of public space. In her artistic practice and research, she questions concepts of urban space and public art. Instead of interrogating people and involving them in the process, Ziegler’s interventional artworks put questions directly to public infrastructure, to walls, fences, or vehicles of public transport. In a post-Beuysian vein, an artist workshop is extended to public space in order to work with its mechanisms and possibilities. Currently Ziegler is working as a professor of artistic research at the Academy of Fine Arts at the University of the Arts Helsinki and as a university lecturer at Transdisciplinary Art Studies (TAITE) at Aalto University in Espoo.
