Meanings and Materialities
Meanings and Materialities
Exhibition 6–15 June
Open every day 12:00-18:00Marika Tervahartiala
Listening with/in/by Drawing is Tervahartiala’s dialogical concept based on her dissertation, artistic research and practice. The co-performing abstract entity, Drawing, has a strong tendency to lead towards un-knowing and not-knowing; towards where there is no other than artistic access. Drawing and drawer are inviting visitors to share their stories, comments and insights; to become listened to with the drawer with/in/by Drawing.
Multidisciplinary artist and scholar Marika Tervahartiala (b. 1976) in her post-doc research and artistic practices is focusing on the questions of drawing. Drawing reveals it/him/herself for Tervahartiala as an emergent, more than a human entity, as technique/material/data, but also as a research method and methdology.
Tervahartiala has been drawn to (pun intended) Drawing and its emergent nature more than the past ten years. Asking what it means to know by drawing, and what kind of knowledge can be reached by drawing, has been and still is Marika Tervahartiala’s personal quest, but also her scholarly ongoing exploration.
This journey has resulted in a doctoral degree from Aalto University (Doctor of Arts / TaT, 2022). Her research interests continue to expand beyond disciplines. At the moment Tervahartiala wonders-ponders around the method of listening with/in/by Drawing and an upcoming group exhibition in Science center Heureka. Tervahartiala in her postdoctoral work seeks creative, artistic and accessible ways to publish research. In and through her works Drawing as a non-human actor brings out surprising moments of awe, not-knowing, unknowing and pure joy.
