Meanings and Materialities
Exhibition 6–15 June
Open every day 12:00-18:00Mirimari Väyrynen
Oil on wooden board and reflective string, 60 x 50 cm, 2024
An Etc. of Encounters consists of two oil paintings imitating wood grains. The paintings are made on
separated panels and bound together with reflective safety strings. Through the motifs and used materials I
deal with themes such as long-lasting processes, growth and protection.
During the exhibition, the paintings will be given to two persons, who in turn are willing to continue the
chain of gift giving. The third and the fourth persons are likely asked to give a gift to someone and I will
collect the stories of gift giving and receiving moments.
Mirimari Väyrynen explores how painting is formed in social processes and in relation to the environment. Alongside making art, she is an extensive appreciator of nature, different cultures and narratives of perceiving the world. Currently Väyrynen is a Doctoral candidate at the Academy of Fine Arts making research about societal potential of painting. Väyrynen has shown her works individually in Finland among others at Gallery Sculptor and Forum Box. Her works have been part of exhibitions at Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Copenhagen (DK), Helsinki Kunstahalle (FI) and CAC Contemporary Art Museum, Málaga (ES).
